The Inspiration for this Research Guide
Most Austen afficianados have their "favorite." I started out with Pride & Prejudice after studying it in a literature class in college, but as I have matured I find my favorites are (currently) Emma and Persuasion. With each re-reading I find new points of connection, new ways of understanding Austen's characters. (CL)
Historical Mystery Fiction: Jane Austen, Detective
Jane and the Unpleasantness at Scargrave Manor by
The first of a very creative series. Jane Austen had some mysterious years when little is known of her life and she seemingly gave up writing her novels. Couldn't this historical mystery series fill that void?!
"Having studied European history at Princeton and counterterrorism with the CIA, Stephanie Barron is as qualified as anybody to do the impossible: write a plausible mystery novel about Jane Austen. Barron's basic conceit is surprisingly persuasive: the same qualities that made Austen a brilliant writer make her an ace detective, namely, her quick wit and her psychological acuity." —
TIME Magazine ("If You Read Only One Mystery Novel This Summer...")
Author, Stephanie Barron, creates amateur detective, Jane Austen. Clever reading. Satisfying and authentic in rich historic detail and plausibility. Six out of five stars raves series fan, Reference Librarian, Cynthia Letteri.
Recent additions to the Austen canon include two lavishly illustrated annotated versions of her classics. Hoping there are more to come!
