Using AI to Support Your Research

How to Cite AI Tools

Citing AI

AI shouldn't be used in place of critical thinking and analysis. Depending on it's use, generative AI fills the same role as background research or sites like Wikipedia -- useful for exploring and understanding a topic, but not something you cite in a paper or project.

For instances when the use of AI tools like ChatGPT is required within your assignments, it needs to be cited, just as you would cite any other information that is not your own. Not citing the use of AI may be considered plagiarism.

MLA - Citing Generative AI

This article from style.mla.org explains how to cite the use of AI "whenever you paraphrase, quote, or incorporate into your own work any content (whether text, image, data, or other) that was created by it."

APA -- Citing ChatGPT

This article from apastyle.apa.org explains how to cite the use of ChatGPT in your assignments.

Citation Generators

A Word About Online Citation Generators

Citation generators like EasyBib (from Chegg) use artificial intelligence to compile a citation based on the information the user gives it or the information that it pulls from the source. In either instance, citation information may be incomplete or inaccurate. Therefore, it's best to avoid using citation generators - they're only as good as the information you give it to start with! Accidentally leaving out citation information can still be considered plagiarism.

  • When using a library database for research, look for their citation tool to grab to citation for the source you're using. That citation will include the database URL, which lets your reader know that the source came from a database.
  • Be sure to choose the correct citation style for that course (APA, MLA, Chicago, etc). If you are unsure which style to use, always ask your instructor.
  • Always review your citation for accuracy before submitting your paper for a grade.

MCC's writing tutors can review your citations for you before you submit your paper. The writing tutors will not correct your citations for you, but they will point out errors and provide suggestions or additional information on citations.

To have your citations reviewed by a writing tutor, go to your Canvas dashboard and click the MCC Tutoring tile. Click Writing and follow their instructions for submitting a paper to their Student Online Writing Lab (SOWL).
