About Newspapers and Magazines

Newspapers and magazines are periodicals that are published to inform and entertain. They are written for the general public. They are not scholarly sources and usually not the type of sources required for academic research. But, depending on your topic and assignment, might be appropriate.

Newspapers are published daily on current events. They are:

  • A good source for local information
  • Written by professional journalists, but not usually by an expert on the topic
  • Fact-checked by an editorial board

Magazines are published at a set interval and cater to a particular audience or topic. They are:

  • Good for an enthusiast related to a specific interest, i.e. gardening, health, astronomy
  • Written by journalists, but not necessarily experts
  • Good for current events and popular, trendy topics
