ENG 152: Database Searching

Using AI to Support Your Research

AI can be another search tool (like databases or the internet) that you can use to support your research goals. There are two types of AI to consider: Generative AI (like ChatGPT) and Research Assistant AI (like Semantic Scholar). Generative AI creates content, whereas Research Assistant AI organizes research and guides researchers to existing information (sources).

ChatGPT - Generative AI

Ways you can ethically use ChatGPT to support your research:

  • Exploring topics and ideas
  • Gathering background information on a topic (also called pre-research)
  • Narrowing the focus of a topic
  • Organizing ideas and outlining your paper
  • Identifying keywords.
  • Should NOT be used in place of research.

The following is an example of how you can query ChatGPT to assist you in identifying keywords. Once you have your keywords, you would then search a library database with those keywords, which will lead you to sources that you can use for your paper.

Semantic Scholar (Research Assistant AI)

Semantic Scholar provides access to millions of academic papers. One of its features is a citation analytics tool that identifies highly influential authors and traces prior work in an area of research.

To use Semantic Scholar, start by entering keywords from a research question. Results appear in order of relevance to your keywords. You can browse the articles, use the filters to change how the results are shown, or click the Related Papers tab for similar papers. Each paper includes an analysis of the citations and identifies "highly influential citations."

Here is an example of search results from entering the keywords climate change and extreme weather.
