AI in IL: The Right Tool for the Job

This guide demonstrates how students may use some AI tools in college or professional level research.

Challenges to Using AI for Research

Keep calm and evaluate your sources

Just because information comes from AI doesn't mean that it can be trusted (and we have lots of reasons not to). Source Evaluation is the focus of our Comp I information literacy instruction and we ask our students to rely on the skills they learned there to think critically about AI-generated responses.

  1. Consider the source of the information: What dataset has the AI been trained on?
  2. Consider the systemic bias: What dataset has the AI been trained on? What bias exists in the algorithm?
  3. Where are the sources coming from: Are the sources from the internet? Are the sources from a database or other defined set?
