APA citations

General Guidelines

Always check with your instructor on their paper formatting requirements, which may override regular formatting guidelines.

Title page: double-spaced; include paper title, [author names (the byline) and author affiliation for professional papers], course number and name for which the paper is being submitted, instructor name, assignment due date, and page number.

Title: Centered on the page, bolded, use appropriate title capitalization; should include header with page number 1.

Fonts:

  • Calibri or Arial, use 11-point font
  • Times New Roman, use 12-point font

Page number: Appears in header, flush with the right margin

Running Head:

  • Professional papers: includes an abbreviated version of the paper's title
  • Student papers: running heads with the title are not used

Spacing: Double-spaced throughout

Margins: 1 inch around

Paragraph alignment: Left justified

Paragraph indentation: Use the Tab key to indent first line of each paragraph 1/2"

Section labels (ie, References): Centered and bold

Section Headings:

  • Level 1: centered and bold
  • Level 2 and 3 headings: left-aligned (and in bold or bold italic, respectively)
  • Level 4 and 5 headings: indented like regular paragraphs.
